What is Rathayatra?

The Langley Rathayatra Festival 2025 in British Columbia brings to life one of Hinduism’s most sacred celebrations, the Chariot Festival, rooted in the ancient traditions of Puri, India. This joyful event honors Lord Jagannath, an incarnation of Lord Krishna, alongside his brother Lord Balabhadra and sister Goddess Subhadra. Adorned chariots, crafted with intricate care, carry the deities through the streets in a lively procession, symbolizing their sacred journey to their aunt’s temple. The Rathayatra invites everyone to experience this Hindu festival’s spiritual depth and cultural beauty, fostering a sense of community and devotion.

# Sacred Silhouette: Jagannath Temple at Dusk This atmospheric photograph captures the iconic Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, during twilight hours. The temple's distinctive architecture is visible in silhouette against a hazy, pale sky, with the sun appearing as a soft glowing orb on the left side of the image. The main temple tower (shikhara) stands prominently in the center, topped with the sacred wheel (chakra) and flag. Several smaller temple structures surround the main tower, creating a complex and impressive skyline. Birds can be seen flying in the distance against the evening sky. In the foreground, there's a boundary wall and what appears to be some activity at ground level, with people gathered near structures at the base of the temple. The entire scene has a mystical quality created by the backlighting and the temple's impressive profile against the fading daylight. This temple is one of the most significant Hindu pilgrimage sites in India, particularly famous for the Jagannath Rath Yatra festival.
