7 SEO Mistakes Small Businesses Make (And How to Fix Them)

Search engine optimisation (SEO) doesn’t have to be complicated, but it’s easy to get wrong. After auditing hundreds of small business websites, we keep seeing the same mistakes.

1. Ignoring Local SEO
If you serve a specific area, your Google Business Profile is just as important as your website. Claim it, fill it out completely, and keep it up to date.
2. Stuffing Keywords
Google got smarter years ago. Writing naturally and covering a topic thoroughly beats cramming the same phrase into every sentence.
3. Skipping Meta Descriptions
They don’t directly affect rankings, but a well-written meta description improves click-through rates — which does matter.

4. Slow Site Speed
A site that takes more than three seconds to load loses visitors. Compress images, use caching, and choose a decent hosting provider.
5. No Internal Linking
Linking between your own pages helps Google understand your site structure and keeps visitors browsing longer.
6. Thin Content
Pages with only a paragraph or two rarely rank. Aim for depth — answer the questions your customers actually ask.
7. Not Tracking Results
If you’re not measuring organic traffic and keyword positions, you’re flying blind. Set up Google Search Console at a minimum.
